Why Is My Candle Smoking? Causes + How to Stop It
A little flicker is normal, but if your candle is smoking, sooting, or leaving black marks on the jar, it’s usually a sign something’s off with the way it’s burning — not that the candle is “bad”.
The good news: most smoking issues are easy to fix with a few simple candle-care tweaks.
Quick answer
The most common reasons a candle smokes are:
- The wick is too long
- The candle is in a draught
- The flame is too large (often from not trimming the wick)
- Debris has fallen into the wax pool
- The candle has been burning for too long
What does “smoking” look like?
You might notice:
- A visible trail of smoke while it’s burning
- A strong “burnt” smell
- Black soot on the inside of the jar
- A flickering, dancing flame
1) The wick is too long (most common)
If the wick is long, the flame gets bigger than it needs to be. That can create smoke and soot.
Fix: Trim the wick before each burn so it’s short and neat.
Tip: If you’ve already lit the candle and it starts smoking, extinguish it safely, let it cool, trim the wick, then relight.
2) Your candle is in a draught
Airflow from open windows, fans, or even a busy walkway can make the flame lean and flicker — which often leads to smoking.
Fix: Move the candle to a calmer spot away from draughts.
3) You’re burning it for too long
Long burns can overheat the wax pool and encourage a larger flame, which can increase soot.
Fix: Burn until you get a full melt pool (melted wax reaching the edges), then extinguish.
4) There’s debris in the wax pool
Wick trimmings, dust, or bits of packaging can act like extra fuel.
Fix: Once the candle has fully cooled and set, remove any debris and keep the wax surface clean.
5) The flame is too large
A large flame can happen from a long wick, draughts, or both.
Fix: Trim the wick, avoid airflow, and make sure the candle is on a stable, heat-safe surface.
Best way to put a candle out (without extra smoke)
Blowing out a candle can create a puff of smoke.
For a cleaner finish, try:
- A candle snuffer
- Gently placing the lid on top (if your candle has one)
Will smoking affect scent throw?
It can. When a candle burns too hot or sooty, the fragrance can smell less “true” and more burnt.
A cleaner burn usually means a better fragrance experience.
