How to Make Candles Last Longer (7 Simple Tips)

How to Make Candles Last Longer (7 Simple Tips)

If you love the cosy glow of a candle, you’ve probably wondered how to make it last as long as possible — without losing scent throw or ending up with wasted wax around the edges.

This guide shares simple, practical candle-care tips you can start using today. They’ll help you get a cleaner burn, a better fragrance experience, and more value from every candle.

Quick checklist (save this)

  • Trim the wick before each burn
  • Let the wax melt edge-to-edge on the first burn
  • Burn for the right amount of time (not too short, not too long)
  • Keep the candle away from draughts
  • Use a candle snuffer (or lid) instead of blowing it out
  • Keep the wax pool clean
  • Store candles properly between burns

1) Trim the wick before every burn

A long wick is one of the fastest ways to waste wax.

Aim for a short, neat wick before lighting. This helps:

  • Reduce soot
  • Prevent a large, flickery flame
  • Improve burn consistency
  • Protect scent throw

If you don’t have a wick trimmer, small scissors work — just make sure any trimmed bits don’t fall into the wax.

2) Nail the first burn (it matters)

The first burn sets the “memory” of your candle.

Let the wax melt all the way to the edges on the first light. If you blow it out too early, you can get tunnelling (a hole down the middle), which leaves wax stuck to the sides.

Tip: Larger candles (like 3-wick bowls) may need a longer first burn than smaller jars.

3) Burn for the right amount of time

Too short = tunnelling risk. Too long = overheating risk.

A good rule of thumb is to burn long enough for a full melt pool, then extinguish.

4) Keep candles away from draughts

Draughts make the flame lean and flicker, which can cause:

  • Uneven burning
  • Soot on the jar
  • Faster wax consumption

Try to keep your candle away from open windows, fans, and busy walkways.

5) Snuff it out (don’t blow)

Blowing out a candle can push smoke and soot into the wax and around the jar.

A snuffer is ideal, but you can also:

  • Gently place the lid on top (if your candle has one)
  • Dip the wick into the wax and straighten it back up (only if you’re confident and safe)

6) Keep the wax pool clean

If you notice wick trimmings or bits of debris in the wax pool, remove them once the wax has set and cooled.

A clean wax pool helps your candle burn more evenly and keeps the fragrance experience fresh.

7) Store candles properly between burns

Where you store your candle affects both scent and appearance.

Store candles:

  • Out of direct sunlight
  • Away from heat sources (radiators, windowsills in summer)
  • With the lid on (if applicable) to protect the fragrance

Which candle should you choose?

If you want a classic everyday candle, a 30cl jar is a great choice.

If you want a bigger statement candle with multiple wicks for a fuller burn experience, a 3-wick bowl candle is perfect for living rooms and open spaces.
